Homework, Quizzes and Simulation Examples: Stress Analysis — Lesson 5

Simulation Examples

Several simulation examples are provided here. Each of them comes with a description file, video instructions, and Ansys simulation file. All of the simulations were conducted using Ansys software. Download the student version of Ansys simulation software here.

(1) Bike Crank

This is a very simple mechanical simulation. Try different material assignments, loads, and boundary conditions. Use your engineering judgment to determine if the results are as expected. Download instructions, the geometry file, and the archived file here.

(2) Lumbar section motion

Try to understand the complex boundary condition of this lumbar section motion simulation. Download instructions, the geometry file and the archived file here.

(3) Reliability study of a composite overwrapped pressure vessel

Stress analysis can be applied to study the reliability of a design. This simulation analyzes the stress distribution of a composite overwrapped pressure vessel. Check the model and try to understand the stress analysis procedure. Download the instructions, the geometry file and the archived model here.

Homework

(1) Pitch arm of a commercial helicopter rotor

There are three different designs in this assignment. The first one is the raw design, the second is an engineer's design, and the third is derived from topology optimization. Review the three designs and compare deformation, strain, stress, and other results. Try to answer the questions below when reviewing the model.

(1) What are an engineer's interests in the design of this pitch arm part? Think about the load condition of the pitch arm.

(2) What are the advantages and disadvantages of the three designs?

(3) What could be used as optimization criteria for this design?

Answer the questions in the quiz related to this problem. Download the instructions, the geometry file and the archived file here.
