The Deformation Gradient: Mapping of Curves — Lesson 1

In this lesson, we discuss how to mathematically represent the deformation of one-dimensional objects, i.e., curves. A tensor called a deformation gradient maps the tangent vectors to a curve from the reference configuration to the current configuration. This mapping of the tangents allows us to derive the deformed shape of the curve. We discuss the mathematical definition of deformation gradients in this lesson.
