Stability of Laminar Flows and Transition to Turbulence - Lesson 2

Before we study turbulent flows in detail, let’s first understand the phenomenon of flow transition. Have you noticed the behavior of smoke coming from a candle after it is put out? It is very smooth in regions very close to the candle wick but, as the smoke rises, it transforms into a very unsteady, chaotic behavior. This change of behavior of any flow is referred to as a transition.

In this lesson, we will discuss the science behind the transition of laminar flows to turbulent flows and understand how flow stability plays a role in this process.
