Battery Thermal Management in Twinbuilder - Lesson 4

A battery management system (BMS) is used in electric vehicles to manage the rechargeable battery in order to keep its operating condition within a safe envelope. A BMS is essential for electrical vehicles to ensure student Formula SAE teams have a functioning battery that will be safe throughout the competition and will safely shut down in the event of an anomaly that puts the battery outside of its safe operating range. Safety is the highest priority at Formula SAE competitions, and inspection judges will not let you compete if you do not meet safety requirements.

Twinbuilder Model

In the video demonstration, students will learn why battery thermal modeling is important, how a reduced-order model (ROM) can help, and how to perform battery thermal management using Ansys Twin Builder. Part 1 goes over solving a conjugate heat transfer model in Ansys Fluent to generate the training data. Part 2 shows how to use the training data with Twin Builder to generate and validate results produced by the ROM and compare these to high-fidelity CFD results from Fluent.
