Ansys Discovery Modeling Tutorial - Oil Rig Geometry - Lesson 7

In this lesson, you will learn how to build a more complex model — an oil rig.

What is an Oil Rig?

An oil rig is a large structure used to drill and extract natural gas and oil located under the seabed.

Modeling Approach:

Our approach to modeling will begin by analyzing the technical drawing. Download the technical drawing and other assembly components required for creating this oil rig model here. Once we have an understanding of its characteristics, we can outline a plan for completing the oil rig model. With a plan in place, we can begin designing the necessary components. We will import, as well as create, several additional parts to complete the oil rig.

Check out the videos below to learn the step-by-step process for creating some of the complex components of an oil rig assembly using Discovery.

Recap:

This oil rig modeling session covered several different topics. You learned how to use sketch tools such as Project, Offset and Polygon.  You then utilized the Blend, Mirror, Shell and Pull (Sweep) tools to create and modify the geometry of several components in the assembly. Finally, you changed the model units from the Discovery Settings menu.
