Intro to the Workflow of Ansys Lumerical FEEM — Lesson 1

Example Device

The device under investigation is a simple silicon strip waveguide fabricated on an SOI (silicon-on-insulator) wafer. The strip waveguide has a height of 220 nm and a width of 500 nm. The waveguide is surrounded by an oxide (SiO2) cladding.

Since the waveguide is uniform in the propagation direction, we can perform an eigenmode analysis on its cross-section using the mode solver to:

  • Calculate the optical modes and look at their field profiles
  • Calculate the effective index and propagation loss of each mode
  • Use a frequency sweep to calculate the group index of the fundamental TE mode.
