Intro to Performance Indices using Ansys Granta EduPack

As established during our “Basic Systematic Materials Selection” course, designers and engineers need to consider materials during design and can use materials selection methodology to do so. But design is often focused on the performance of a product. So how can we ensure our materials will perform as intended in our final product?

In this Ansys Innovation Course, “Intro to Performance Indices,” we will expand on the materials selection methodology introduced in the “Basic Systematic Materials Selection” course and introduce the concept of performance indices, or a single material property or group of properties that represent the performance of our design. By using performance indices alongside the methodology during the design process, one can ensure that all the design requirements and performance needs are accounted for.

This course will cover:

    • The definition of performance indices.
    • How to derive performance indices using design requirements.
  • How to apply performance indices during materials selection using Ansys Granta EduPack.
  • An example case study of materials selection with performance indices for the deck of a longboard.

Please use this handout to follow along with the course content. References, such as the “Materials Selection in Mechanical Design” textbook, and relevant links can be found in the Relevant Links segment of the course.

If you are not familiar with the Ashby Selection Methodology, it is recommended to take the Basic Systematic Materials Selection before taking this course to avoid unnecessary confusion.
