From HVAC systems to electronics cooling, from power generation to food preparation, heat transfer is everywhere. In fact, the very existence of life on Earth depends on the heat from sun. The process of heat transfer occurs between two systems that are at different temperatures, with the system at higher temperature transmitting energy to the system at lower temperature. This transmission of energy can take place via three modes: conduction, convection and radiation. Often, in real-world situations, heat is transferred by all the three modes simultaneously. In this course, we will start by discussing some fundamental concepts of thermodynamics, understand the different modes of heat transfer and finally dig deeper into the process of heat transfer through conduction.
