Intro to Linear Elliptic Partial Differential Equations - Lesson 1

This lesson starts with a description of what will be the overall scope of the course. This lesson discusses the linear elliptic differential equations in one dimension. As examples problems of heat conduction, mass diffusion, and elasticity are discussed first. A problem of bar fixed at one end and subjected to displacement and force is discussed towards the end.

The problem of bar discussed at the end of previous lesson is continued here and expressed mathematically. The differential equation with boundary conditions is written for the bar. Dirichlet and Neumann boundary conditions are shown and explained. Displacement and Traction boundary conditions are shown which are nothing but the Dirichlet and Neumann boundary conditions.
