This introductory lesson frames the outline for the course “Electrothermal Management using HFSS and Icepak.” This lesson illustrates the importance of thermal analysis for electronic circuits and components. Overheating can degrade the performance of or even destroy components in a circuit, so it is crucial to conduct a thermal analysis of a device to ensure healthy performance. Sometimes it is not possible to choose a lossless dielectric due to design constraints, and a conductor always has losses due to its finite conductivity, so thermal analysis can be helpful to identify heat sources and methods of cooling.
This lesson also describes the basic steps of an electrothermal management analysis using HFSS and Icepak, along with the types of coupling between them inside AEDT.
