# Multiphysics Using Ansys Maxwell — Lesson 5

In this lesson, we will discuss Maxwell multiphysics coupling capabilities inside Ansys Workbench. Workbench is a project management tool that can be considered as the top-level interface linking all Ansys software tools. Workbench handles the passing of data between the Ansys geometry mesh solver and post-processing tools.

This lesson consists of one lecture and three workshops.

In this lecture, we will introduce you to Ansys Workbench and discuss the coupling capabilities.

### Workshop 5.1: Electromagnetic Mechanical Coupling

This workshop will discuss how to use Ansys Maxwell inside Ansys Workbench to study mechanical deformation due to electromagnetic forces.
The following tasks will be performed:

• The geometry of a simple helical coil will be imported in Ansys DesignModeler
• The geometry will be shared with Maxwell 3D Design
• An electromagnetic-magnetostatic analysis will be carried out
• The Maxwell solutions will be sent to a structural design
• The structural analysis will be performed
• The deformation will be shown

### Workshop 5.2: Electromagnetic Thermal Coupling

This workshop will discuss how to use Ansys Maxwell inside Ansys Workbench to study temperature distribution due to ohmic losses.
The following tasks will be performed:

• The geometry of a simple wave coil will be imported directly into Maxwell
• Alternatively, the same geometry will be created through the 3D Maxwell Modeler
• An electromagnetic-magnetostatic analysis will be carried out
• The Maxwell solutions will be sent for thermal steady-state analysis
• The thermal analysis will be performed
• The temperature distribution will be shown

### Workshop 5.3: Eddy Current Solver and Steady-State Thermal

This workshop will discuss how to use Ansys Maxwell inside Ansys Workbench to study the thermal effects due to induced eddy currents.
The following tasks will be performed:

• An already set Maxwell 3D eddy current project will be imported into Ansys Workbench
• The Maxwell geometry will be shared to a steady state thermal system
• The Maxwell solution will be connected as an input to the steady state thermal system setup
• The material properties will be updated
• The thermal analysis will be set up and the simulation will be launched
• The temperature distribution on the target object will be shown
